Past Perfect Continuous
Di akhir lesson ini, kamu bisa:
- Membentuk kalimat dengan had been + kata kerja-ing.
- Menekankan durasi sebuah aksi yang berlangsung sampai titik tertentu di masa lampau (for/since).
- Membedakan Past Perfect Continuous (proses) dari Past Perfect (hasil yang selesai).
Bentuk (Form)
Past Perfect Continuous menekankan durasi atau lamanya sebuah aksi yang berlangsung sampai suatu titik di masa lampau. Bentuknya: had been + kata kerja-ing.
Bentuk had been sama untuk semua subjek (I / you / he / she / we / they).

Catatan penting:
- Bentuk pendek: had = 'd (She'd been working), had not = hadn't.
- Tense ini biasanya berpasangan dengan titik acuan lampau: ...before the meeting started, ...by the time he arrived, ...when I called.
- Kata kerja keadaan (stative) seperti know, want, own, believe tidak dipakai dalam bentuk -ing. Untuk itu gunakan Past Perfect: I had known her for years (bukan had been knowing).
Kapan Dipakai (Usage)
- Menekankan lamanya sebuah aksi sampai titik tertentu di masa lampau.
By the time the client called, we had been waiting for two hours.
- Menjelaskan sebab yang terlihat hasilnya di masa lampau (situasi yang baru saja terjadi).
Her eyes were red because she had been crying. The road was wet because it had been raining.
- Aksi yang berlangsung lama lalu berhenti tepat sebelum momen lampau lain.
He had been working at the bank before he moved to our company.
Kontras: Past Perfect Continuous vs Past Perfect
Keduanya bicara tentang aksi sebelum titik lampau lain, tetapi fokusnya berbeda:

💡 Bandingkan: She had been painting the office (menyoroti proses; mungkin belum tentu selesai) vs She had painted the office (hasil: ruangannya sudah dicat). Pilih Continuous untuk proses/durasi, Perfect biasa untuk hasil yang tuntas.
Penanda Waktu (Time Markers / Signal Words)
- for + lama waktu: I had been working for three hours.
- since + titik mulai: He had been waiting since 8 a.m.
- for hours / for days: We had been driving for hours.
- all day / all morning: They had been meeting all day.
- before: She was exhausted; she had been studying before the test.
- by the time: By the time he arrived, I had been waiting for an hour.
Examples (English)
By the time the manager arrived, we had been working for six hours. He was tired because he had been driving all night. Had they been planning the launch for long? The team had been testing the app for weeks before it finally went live.

Kesalahan Umum (Common Mistakes)
- ❌ "I had been work for hours." → ✅ "I had been working for hours." (setelah had been, pakai kata kerja -ing)
- ❌ "She has been waiting when I arrived." → ✅ "She had been waiting when I arrived." (konteks lampau pakai had been, bukan has been)
- ❌ "I had been knowing her for years." → ✅ "I had known her for years." (kata kerja keadaan pakai Past Perfect biasa, bukan -ing)
- ❌ "We had been finishing the report by Friday." (menekankan hasil selesai) → ✅ "We had finished the report by Friday." (hasil tuntas = Past Perfect; durasi/proses = Past Perfect Continuous)
