Participle Clauses
Di akhir lesson ini, kamu bisa:
- Memendekkan klausa aktif menjadi participle clause -ing (Walking in, she ...).
- Memendekkan klausa pasif menjadi participle clause -ed (Faced with ..., we ...).
| Jenis | Makna | Struktur | Contoh |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ing (present participle) | aktif / bersamaan / sebab | verb-ing + ... | Walking into the room, she froze. |
| -ed (past participle) | pasif | verb-ed + ... | Faced with criticism, he stayed calm. |
| Perfect (having + V3) | aksi selesai lebih dulu | Having + V3 + ... | Having finished the report, she left. |
Cara mengubah klausa penuh menjadi participle clause:
- Aktif → -ing: Because she knew the risks, she proceeded. → Knowing the risks, she proceeded.
- Pasif → -ed: Because he was faced with criticism, he stayed calm. → Faced with criticism, he stayed calm.
- Urutan jelas → perfect: After she had finished the report, she left. → Having finished the report, she left.
Catatan penting:
- -ing = aktif, -ed = pasif. Confusing the team (klausa membingungkan) ≠ Confused by the data (subjek yang bingung).
Working from home, she managed both calls and emails.
- Menyatakan sebab tanpa "because" (gaya formal):
Knowing the deadline was tight, the team split the tasks.
- Menggunakan makna pasif secara ringkas dengan -ed:
Faced with falling demand, the company restructured.
- Menunjukkan urutan yang jelas dengan perfect participle:
Having reviewed the figures, the board approved the plan.
Examples (English)
Having considered all the options, we decided to outsource the work. Faced with a tight budget, the team prioritised the core features. Based on customer feedback, we redesigned the dashboard. Walking through the warehouse, the auditor noticed several issues.

Dialogue
Wrapping up a review meeting
Having reviewed the numbers, I think we should pause the campaign.
Faced with these results, I agree it's the safer move.
Based on last quarter, a short pause won't hurt us much.
Working together on the revised plan, we can relaunch by May.
Kesalahan Umum
- ❌ "Faced with criticism, the meeting ended early." → ✅ "Faced with criticism, he stayed calm." (subjek participle harus orang yang dihadapkan, bukan the meeting: dangling participle).
- ❌ "Finishing the report, it was sent." → ✅ "Having finished the report, she sent it." (subjek harus sama dan jelas; pakai perfect untuk urutan).
- ❌ "Knowing the risks, the project was approved." → ✅ "Knowing the risks, the board approved the project." (subjek yang knowing harus orang, bukan the project).
- ❌ "Confused by the data, the report misled readers." → ✅ "Confused by the data, readers misread the report." (-ed = pasif, harus menerangkan subjek yang bingung).

Ringkasan
- Jebakan utama: dangling participle: bila subjeknya tak cocok, kalimat menjadi salah/janggal.
