Diplomatic Disagreement

Rumus emasnya: akui dulu, baru tolak. Anda menunjukkan bahwa Anda mendengar lawan sebelum menyampaikan keberatan, sehingga penolakan terasa sebagai pertimbangan, bukan serangan.

Struktur tiga langkah:

  1. Acknowledge: "I appreciate where you're coming from…" / "That's a valid point…"
  2. Soften: "…but I'd have to say…" / "…with respect…" / "I'm not entirely convinced that…"
  3. State your position clearly: keberatan disampaikan tanpa ambigu.

Perhatikan kekuatan understatement (meremehkan secara halus) di konteks kerja. Kalimat seperti "I have some reservations" sering kali berarti keberatan yang serius. Sinyalnya ada pada nada dan konteks.

Terlalu lunak (lemah)Diplomatis (tepat)Terlalu keras (berisiko)
"Maybe… I'm not sure…""With respect, I'd have to disagree.""That's just wrong."
"Whatever you think is fine.""I'm not entirely convinced that the numbers hold.""You haven't thought this through."
"I guess it could work.""I appreciate the logic, but I have reservations.""No. Bad idea."

Tip: Frasa "with respect" atau "with all due respect" menandakan penolakan kuat yang akan menyusul. Ucapkan dengan tenang: justru ketenangan yang membuatnya terdengar profesional, bukan sarkastik.

Hindari menumpuk softener berlebihan ("Maybe possibly I might slightly disagree perhaps"). Itu terdengar ragu dan melemahkan kredibilitas. Satu pengakuan + satu softener + posisi yang jelas sudah cukup.

Examples (English)

"I appreciate where you're coming from, but I'm not sure the market will bear another price increase this quarter."

"With respect, I'd have to disagree. The data we're looking at points the other way."

"That's a valid point: though I'm not entirely convinced that the savings outweigh the reputational risk."

"I'd like to push back on one assumption, if I may: that customer demand will stay flat."

Dialogue

Disagreeing in a strategy meeting

Head of Sales (Tom)

I think we should slash prices across the board to win back market share. It's the fastest lever we have.

CFO (Anya)

I appreciate where you're coming from, Tom: share matters. But I'm not entirely convinced that a blanket cut is the right tool here.

Head of Sales (Tom)

Why not? Lower prices, higher volume. It's straightforward.

CFO (Anya)

With respect, I'd have to push back on that. Once we train the market on discounts, it's very hard to walk them back. I have real reservations about the margin impact.

Head of Sales (Tom)

Fair. So what would you propose instead?

CFO (Anya)

A valid point deserves a real alternative. I'd suggest targeted discounts for at-risk accounts only: same intent, far less margin damage. Could we model that first?

Head of Sales (Tom)

That, I can live with. Let's run the numbers.
