Making Connections
Penjelasan (ID)
Di level Advanced, networking bukan soal menghafal kalimat pembuka, tapi soal nada (tone), timing, dan kehalusan. Tujuannya: membuka percakapan tanpa terdengar kaku atau memaksa, lalu mengarahkannya menuju common ground.
1. Membuka dengan halus (the graceful opener).
"I don't think we've had the pleasure: I'm Andi."
Alternatif natural lainnya:
| Situasi | Pembuka natural |
|---|---|
| Belum saling kenal | "I don't think we've met: I'm Sari, from the product team." |
| Acara/konferensi | "Have you been to one of these before, or is this your first time?" |
| Mengomentari sesi | "I thought that last talk raised some really interesting points: what did you make of it?" |
| Lewat orang ketiga | "Maya tells me you two used to work together: small world." |
"I lead partnerships at a logistics startup: basically, I help retailers ship faster without building their own fleet. What about you?"
What about you?") agar bola berpindah.
3. Menemukan common ground.
"Oh, you're in fintech too? Then you've probably run into the same compliance headaches we have."
Tip: Di konteks profesional internasional, softeners (I think, perhaps, it seems, kind of) membuatmu terdengar percaya diri dan sopan: bukan ragu. Justru orang yang berbicara terlalu blak-blakan sering terdengar agresif.
Examples (English)
"I don't think we've had the pleasure: I'm Rina, I head up marketing at Nusantara Foods."
"Have you been to one of these conferences before? I'm trying to figure out which sessions are actually worth it."
"Basically, we help SMEs automate their invoicing: it sounds dull, but it saves them about ten hours a week. How about your side of the room?"
"It sounds like we're wrestling with the same problem, then. We should compare notes."

Dialogue
At a fintech conference coffee break
I don't think we've had the pleasure: I'm Andi, from Bayar Cepat.
Priya, nice to meet you. So you're on the payments side?
We are, yes. Basically, we help small merchants accept digital payments without the usual setup headache. What brings you here?
I run compliance for a lending startup, so I suspect we've fought a few of the same regulatory battles.
Don't get me started! It sounds like we should grab a proper coffee and compare notes.
I'd like that. Here's my card: let's not let this be one of those conference contacts that goes nowhere.
