  • Menyesuaikan gaya komunikasi sendiri saat bekerja dengan rekan dari budaya lain.

Penjelasan (ID)

Saat bekerja dengan rekan, klien, atau atasan dari negara lain, kemampuan Bahasa Inggris saja tidak cukup. Kamu juga perlu cultural awareness: kepekaan terhadap cara orang dari budaya berbeda berkomunikasi dan berperilaku di tempat kerja. Tujuannya bukan menghafal stereotip, melainkan menjadi lebih peka dan adaptif (aware and adaptable).

1. Direct vs Indirect (langsung vs tidak langsung)

Ini perbedaan paling penting. Pada budaya direct, orang menyampaikan maksud secara terbuka dan to the point; "No" berarti "No". Pada budaya indirect, penolakan atau kritik disampaikan secara halus dan tersirat agar tidak membuat orang lain kehilangan muka.

2. Hierarki (hierarchy)

Di budaya dengan flat hierarchy, junior boleh menyela atau menantang ide bos secara terbuka. Di budaya dengan strong hierarchy, keputusan datang dari atas dan menantang atasan di depan umum dianggap tidak sopan. Perhatikan siapa yang berbicara dan kapan dalam rapat.

3. Sikap terhadap waktu (attitudes to time)

  • Monochronic (mis. Jerman, Swiss, Jepang): waktu = uang; punctuality mutlak, agenda diikuti ketat.
  • Polychronic (mis. banyak negara Amerika Latin, Timur Tengah, sebagian Asia Tenggara): jadwal lebih fleksibel, hubungan lebih penting daripada menit.

4. Small talk & etiket bisnis

Sebelum masuk ke urusan bisnis, banyak budaya mengharapkan small talk untuk membangun kepercayaan. Di budaya lain, langsung ke pokok masalah justru dianggap profesional. Etiket lain yang berbeda: bertukar business card (di Jepang dengan dua tangan), kapan boleh memakai nama depan, dan seberapa banyak kontak mata yang sopan.

💡 Tip bahasa: hindari generalisasi mutlak. Pakai kata penghalus seperti tend to, often, in many cultures, atau generally: "German colleagues tend to be direct", bukan "Germans are direct". Ini lebih akurat dan jauh lebih sopan.
