Formal vs Informal Style
Di akhir lesson ini, kamu bisa:
- Membedakan ciri email formal dan informal.
- Mengganti phrasal verb dengan kata kerja formal yang sesuai.
- Memilih nada yang tepat untuk penerima dan situasi.
Penjelasan (ID)
Email kerja bisa formal atau informal. Bukan soal benar-salah, tapi soal kecocokan dengan penerima.
- Formal: klien, atasan, orang yang belum dikenal, surat resmi, keluhan.
- Informal: rekan satu tim, kolega akrab, pesan singkat sehari-hari.
Ciri 1: Kontraksi
Bentuk singkat membuat email terasa santai. Bentuk penuh terasa lebih resmi.
| Informal | Formal |
|---|---|
| I'm, we're | I am, we are |
| don't, won't | do not, will not |
| I'd, we'll | I would, we will |
Ciri 2: Phrasal verb vs kata kerja formal
Phrasal verb (kata kerja + partikel) terdengar santai. Dalam email formal, ganti dengan satu kata kerja yang lebih resmi.
| Phrasal verb (informal) | Kata kerja formal |
|---|---|
| set up | arrange / organise |
| get | receive |
| look into | investigate |
| put off | postpone |
| sort out | resolve |
| find out | discover / confirm |
| go up / go down | increase / decrease |
Ciri 3: Kata sapaan & nada
- Informal:
Hi Sam,...Thanks!...Cheers, - Formal:
Dear Mr Lee,...Thank you....Kind regards, - Informal sering memakai kata "say sorry"; formal memakai apologise: "I apologise for the delay."
๐ก Tips: Jika ragu, pilih yang sedikit lebih formal. Lebih aman terlihat sopan daripada terlalu santai.
Bandingkan dua email
Informal (ke rekan): Hi Sam, can you set up a call for tomorrow? I didn't get the file yet. Thanks!
Formal (ke klien): Dear Mr Lee, I would like to arrange a call for tomorrow. We have not yet received the file. Thank you.
Examples (English)
"Could you arrange a meeting for Monday?" (formal): instead of "set up". "We have received your documents." (formal): instead of "got". "We will look into it right away." (informal, to a teammate). "I apologise for any inconvenience." (formal).
Kosakata

| get (verb) | mendapat/menerima (informal) | Did you get my last email? |

Dialogue
Choosing the right tone
My draft says 'Hey, can you sort this out?' Is that okay for the client?
Too casual. For a client, write 'Could you please resolve this?'
And 'I didn't get your email'?
Make it 'I have not received your email': no contraction, formal verb.
Got it. I'll keep the casual style only for the team chat.
