Tone, Register & Subtlety
Di akhir lesson ini, kamu bisa:
- Menyesuaikan register dari formal ke informal sesuai audiens dan situasi.
- Memakai understatement dan implikasi untuk melembutkan pesan.
- Membaca makna tersirat (reading between the lines) dalam komunikasi kerja.
Penjelasan (ID)
Pilih sesuai audiens:
| Fungsi | Informal (kolega dekat) | Formal (klien/atasan senior) |
|---|---|---|
| Meminta | "Can you send it over?" | "Could you possibly send that across when you have a moment?" |
| Menolak | "No, that won't work." | "I'm afraid that may not be feasible." |
| Menyetujui | "Sounds good!" | "That would be perfectly acceptable." |
| Mengeluh | "This is a mess." | "There appear to be a few issues we should address." |
๐ก Tips: Makin formal, makin banyak modal sopan (could, would, might), hedging (perhaps, somewhat, a little), dan kalimat pasif/impersonal (it appears that...) yang menjaga jarak emosional.
2. Understatement & implikasi
Penutur Inggris (terutama Inggris British) sering mengecilkan sesuatu untuk terdengar sopan atau ironis. Pahami makna sebenarnya:
| Yang dikatakan | Makna sebenarnya |
|---|---|
| "It's not exactly ideal." | Ini buruk / bermasalah. |
| "There's a bit of a problem." | Ada masalah serius. |
| "I'm not entirely convinced." | Saya tidak setuju. |
| "That's one way to look at it." | Saya tidak setuju dengan caramu. |
| "With all due respect..." | Saya akan menentangmu sekarang. |
3. Melembutkan kabar buruk (softening the blow)
Susun kabar buruk dengan pola: buffer โ berita โ dukungan.
- Buffer: "I appreciate all the effort you put in..."
- Berita: "...however, we've decided to go in a different direction."
- Dukungan: "I'd be happy to give feedback for next time."
Gunakan juga frasa pelunak: unfortunately, I'm afraid, regrettably, as things stand, it's not looking likely.
4. Membaca makna tersirat (reading between the lines)
Jika klien berkata "We'll keep your proposal on file" atau "Let's circle back later", itu biasanya penolakan halus, bukan janji.
Bila Anda butuh kejelasan, sopan untuk meminta: "Just to be clear, are you saying yes or no?"
Examples (English)
"I'm afraid the timeline isn't entirely realistic: could we revisit it?" (menolak halus) "With all due respect, I see it a little differently." (menentang sopan) "I appreciate the work, but unfortunately we won't be moving forward this quarter." (kabar buruk) "They said they'd 'keep us in mind': reading between the lines, it's a no." (makna tersirat)

Dialogue
Delivering difficult feedback
Thanks for coming in. I want to be candid with you about the pitch.
Of course. I'd rather hear it straight.
The concept is strong. That said, the budget isn't entirely realistic as it stands.
I'm reading between the lines: you'd like me to cut costs significantly?
Let me soften the blow: keep the creative, trim the production. There's still a path forward.
Understood. With all due respect, can I propose phasing it instead?

Ringkasan

- Melembutkan kabar buruk: buffer โ berita โ dukungan, dengan frasa unfortunately/I'm afraid.
- Reading between the lines: perhatikan apa yang tidak dijanjikan: sering itu penolakan halus.
