Past Simple vs Past Continuous
Di akhir lesson ini, kamu bisa:
- Membedakan kapan memakai Past Simple (aksi selesai) dan Past Continuous (aksi berlangsung).
- Memakai pola while/when untuk menggambarkan aksi yang memotong (interrupted action).
- Mengenali perbedaan makna lewat minimal pairs dua tense ini.
Bentuk & Aturan
Dua tense ini sering muncul dalam satu kalimat, tetapi tugasnya berbeda. Past Simple menyatakan aksi yang selesai (biasanya singkat) di masa lampau. Past Continuous menyatakan aksi yang sedang berlangsung (biasanya panjang) di sebuah titik atau sebagai latar sebuah cerita.
| Tense | Struktur | Fungsi | Contoh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Past Simple | subject + V2 | aksi selesai / singkat | The phone rang. |
| Past Continuous | subject + was/were + V-ing | aksi berlangsung / latar | I was sleeping. |
Saat keduanya digabung untuk aksi yang terpotong (interrupted action), aksi panjang yang sedang berjalan pakai Past Continuous, dan aksi pendek yang memotongnya pakai Past Simple:
| Pola | Struktur | Contoh |
|---|---|---|
| when + aksi pendek | Past Continuous + when + Past Simple | I was sleeping when the alarm rang. |
| while + aksi panjang | Past Simple + while + Past Continuous | The alarm rang while I was sleeping. |
Catatan penting:
- when biasanya diikuti aksi pendek (Past Simple) yang memotong; while biasanya diikuti aksi panjang (Past Continuous) yang sedang berjalan.
- Klausa while/when boleh di depan atau di belakang; jika di depan, pisahkan dengan koma: While I was driving, she called.
- Bila ada dua aksi pendek berurutan, keduanya pakai Past Simple: When she arrived, we started the meeting.
Kapan Dipakai
- Pakai Past Simple untuk aksi yang selesai: entah singkat atau berurutan.
I finished the report and sent it to my manager.
- Pakai Past Continuous untuk latar atau aksi yang belum selesai di sebuah momen.
At 9 a.m. I was preparing the slides.
- Gabungkan keduanya untuk aksi panjang yang dipotong aksi pendek: pakai when sebelum aksi pendek.
I was presenting when the projector stopped.
- Pakai while untuk menonjolkan aksi panjang yang sedang berjalan.
While the team was testing, I wrote the notes.
Minimal Pairs: Makna Berubah dengan Tense
Perhatikan bagaimana mengganti tense mengubah arti kalimat:
| Kalimat | Makna |
|---|---|
| When she called, I cooked dinner. | Telepon dulu, baru saya mulai memasak (dua aksi berurutan). |
| When she called, I was cooking dinner. | Saya sudah sedang memasak saat telepon datang (aksi memotong). |
| When the film started, we left. | Kami pergi setelah film mulai. |
| When the film started, we were leaving. | Kami sedang dalam proses pergi saat film mulai. |
Examples (English)
I was driving to work when I saw the accident. While she was talking to a client, the manager walked in. We were having lunch when the fire alarm went off. When the meeting ended, everyone left quickly.

- ❌ "When the alarm was ringing, I was waking up." → ✅ "When the alarm rang, I woke up." (dua aksi pendek berurutan pakai Past Simple)
- ❌ "I slept when you called." → ✅ "I was sleeping when you called." (aksi latar yang sedang berjalan = Past Continuous)

Ringkasan
- Past Simple = aksi selesai (singkat atau berurutan); Past Continuous = aksi berlangsung atau latar.
- Aksi terpotong: aksi panjang (Past Continuous) + when + aksi pendek (Past Simple); while biasanya menonjolkan aksi panjang.
- Makna berubah dengan tense: was cooking (sudah berjalan) vs cooked (mulai sesudahnya): perhatikan minimal pairs.
- Jebakan: dua aksi pendek berurutan pakai Past Simple, bukan Past Continuous.
