Narrative Tenses

Past simplerangkaian peristiwa utama, satu demi satuShe opened the laptop and read the email.
Past continuouslatar / aksi yang sedang berlangsungThe rain was falling as we left the office.
Past perfectkejadian yang terjadi sebelum peristiwa utamaBy 9 a.m. the client had already signed the deal.
Past perfect continuousdurasi sebuah aksi sebelum satu titik lampauShe was tired; she had been working all night.

Catatan penting:

  • Past simple adalah tulang punggung narasi: ia mendorong cerita maju langkah demi langkah. He arrived, sat down, and started talking.
  • Past continuous sering memberi latar untuk aksi past simple yang menyela: I was reading when the phone rang. (latar panjang + kejadian singkat).
  • Past perfect "memutar mundur" timeline: dipakai saat satu kejadian sudah selesai sebelum kejadian lampau lain. Tanpa past perfect, urutannya bisa rancu.
  • Past perfect continuous menekankan lamanya sebuah proses sampai satu titik di masa lampau, sering untuk menjelaskan sebab: His eyes were red because he had been crying.

Kapan Dipakai

  • Past simple: menggerakkan alur peristiwa utama:

The manager walked in, closed the door, and announced the news.

  • Past continuous: melukiskan latar atau aksi yang menyela:

While the team was presenting, the projector suddenly died.

  • Past perfect: menandai kejadian yang lebih dahulu (flashback):

When I got to the station, the train had already left.

  • Past perfect continuous: menekankan durasi sebelum titik lampau:

By the time we finished, we had been negotiating for six hours.

๐Ÿ’ก Kunci urutan: when sering mengikuti kejadian singkat (past simple), sedangkan while/as sering mengikuti aksi yang berlangsung (past continuous). Bandingkan: When she called, I was cooking. vs While I was cooking, she called.

Examples (English)

The office was buzzing with talk when the director finally walked in. By the time the audit started, we had prepared every document. She looked exhausted because she had been travelling for two days. As the client was explaining the problem, our engineer quietly fixed it.

Ringkasan

  • Empat tense, empat tugas: past simple (alur utama), past continuous (latar/aksi berlangsung), past perfect (kejadian lebih dahulu), past perfect continuous (durasi sebelum titik lampau).
  • Penanda waktu seperti when, while, as, by the time, after, before, already membantu menetapkan urutan peristiwa.
  • Jebakan utama: cukup satu past perfect untuk kejadian yang lebih awal; jangan pakai past perfect di setiap kalimat. While/as โ†’ past continuous; when + kejadian singkat โ†’ past simple.
  • Narasi yang baik berpindah-pindah antar tense ini agar urutan dan latar cerita jelas.
